041 - Busselton to Herron Point (7/5/17)

Sunset over Herron Point - Just want this to pop up Facebook as the main pic for the link... :)

It was once again time to roll wheels as we feel if we don’t get back a move on we might not actually avoid Winter, which was one of my goals for the year!

So we bid Busselton adieu and pointed the Rock Truck North up the highway. A really nice town “Busso” and I could see myself spending a lot of time there. A really good place to launch an attack on the winery region, but also entertaining in it’s own right.

As we rolled down the highway we weren’t exactly sure how far we were going, but knowing that I needed to get the van looked at before we pass “civilisation” and head into the great unknown North of Perth.

Rolling out of the CP at Busselton

A quick stop in Bunbury for some morning tea and a stroll around, I left unimpressed, but really that’s probably unfair. I mean, how much can you tell by driving through a town and giving it 15min of your time? Still, B managed to pick up another Garmin pedometer after dropping her last one down a drop toilet waiting for someone to pick her up at Hellfire Bay one time… So she was happy. Perhaps it was negotiating JB Hifi’s carpark with a 20ft caravan on the back the reason I wasn’t enamoured by the place?

I did like that Bunbury had dedicated main street parking for caravanners. Progressive I thought.

And then on a stroll to stretch our legs, I noticed this sign draped over the main street. Whilst I'm not sure who the "Monster" is, I reckon I could make a few guesses of the CWW equivalent. :) Progressive and proactive. I like it.

In the end we didn’t roll far, and ended up at Herron Point, a nice council run park a kilometres out of Mandurah. On the way we picked up a few bags of wood and on the promise that fires were allowed at this campsite. I also managed to fail to hook up the Stone Stomper after loading said bags of wood into the truck and have managed to lose one entire buckle and half of another. Incredibly frustrating when simple mistakes lead to avoidable damage, but I suppose them’s the breaks. I managed some bush mechanic solutions using a spare carabiner and some cable ties, and she’s holding steady at the moment. Might need to discuss with the Stone Stomper guys about potential replacement straps, but for now we’ll keep on trucking and investing in cable ties…

Herron Point turned out to be an absolute ripper spot, located on the edge of Collins Pool, a saltwater “estuary” south of Mandurah. There were a few vans dotted around the campground, but largely there was enough space for us to feel isolated enough and appreciative of the low key accommodation.
Once set up we headed across to the beach to have a look and throw a few lures in the shallow water. Without wind and with sun beaming down, it was simply stunning standing out in the still water casting around in the warmth.

Beautiful...

Sam's Ninja training has advanced to "Water Walking". How miraculous of him. And he has a little 'grasshopper' in tow too.

And then... everyone was getting in on the act.

This was the only "monster" we caught, care of B's rod. Plenty of little nibbles so I suspect he had loads of mates and he was just the sucker...

We met up with the Ranger who informed us that fires actually weren’t allowed until the end of the month… We were seething as we were sure the website send end of April. Still, we did what we were told and that night didn’t set fire to anything. We did however keep an eye on how many did and whether or not the Ranger did a drive by. We even managed to swap one of our bags of wood for a classy bottle of red to a South African couple who were more than happy to have a little fire. As did on last count 4 other groups!

Still, we did what we were told. For one night…
